How to get your VA Certificate of Eligibility (COE)

The COE is step one of every VA loan. Here's how to get it, often in minutes through your lender.

Updated September 29, 2026 · By the Digital Mortgage, LLC VA lending team

A Certificate of Eligibility (COE) confirms to your lender that you qualify for the VA home loan benefit and shows your entitlement. You need one before a VA loan can close.

Three ways to request a COE

  1. Through your lender (fastest). Lenders can use the VA's online system, Web LGY, and many COEs come back in minutes. We do this for our borrowers.
  2. Online at VA.gov with your VA account.
  3. By mail using VA Form 26-1880, sent to your regional loan center. This takes the longest.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to get a VA COE?

Through a lender using Web LGY it's often immediate. Online requests are usually quick, and mail requests take the longest.

Can my lender get my COE for me?

Yes. Most VA lenders, including Digital Mortgage, can request your COE online with your permission.

What if I don't have my DD214?

You can request a copy of your military records from the National Archives, and your lender can often still request the COE with the information you have.

Does the COE show how much I can borrow?

No. It shows your entitlement. Your lender determines how much you can borrow based on income, credit, debts, and the appraisal.
